By three o’clock in the afternoon, the time mentioned by the astrologer as auspicious, a few close friends of the family arrived and soon, the house was packed with invitees. The prospective groom’s party of ten members who spanned four generations—grandparents, parents, the groom, his two teenage cousins, a married sister, her spouse and their infant son—joined soon after. On seeing the two cars stop in front of the house, Mr Swamy rushed out to welcome the guests. He excitedly called out to his wife and the call was relayed through the many relatives in the house. Kanakam, dressed in a green silk saree, finally bustled out onto the front porch with a welcoming smile. Meera, in keeping with tradition, was hidden from view, her cousins keeping her company in an anteroom.

The men in the visiting group entered the house, followed by the women, who came bearing gifts of fruit, flowers, coconuts, betel leaves and areca nuts, packets of vermilion and turmeric powder, and trays of home-made sweets. After a formal exchange of pleasantries between the elders, the visitors settled down to the serious business of ‘bride viewing’.
